One State, Many Numbering Regions

New York State area codes reflect the state’s geography: a dense metropolitan south where overlays stack several codes on one map, and a spacious upstate where one or two codes can serve a whole region. This page lists the established state codes and their overlays, grouped by region, so you can place any New York number quickly.

New York City alone accounts for eight codes: 212, 646 and 332 in Manhattan, 718, 347, 929 and 465 in the outer boroughs, and 917 across all five boroughs. Long Island, the Hudson Valley and the Capital District each have their own overlay pairs. Further north and west, 315 with 680, 585, 607, 716 and 914 and 845 country operate on a larger, quieter scale. Every code below is dialed with 10 digits within its own area where overlays exist, and 10-digit dialing is mandatory everywhere in New York City.

How to use this list: Find the region first, then the code. Overlay codes share the exact map of the code they sit on, so a region with two codes still has one geography.

Read the overlay pairs as single territories with two labels. In the Capital District, a 518 number and an 838 number can be next door neighbours. On Long Island, 516 and 624 share Nassau County exactly, and 631 and 934 share Suffolk County exactly. The same principle operates in New York City, where it reaches its fullest form with four codes, 718, 347, 929 and 465, sharing the outer boroughs.

The list in number order is the fastest way to check a single code from a caller ID. Notice how the city’s codes cluster in the list but not in age: 212 dates to 1947, 718 arrived in 1984 as a split from 212, 917 followed in 1992, 347 and 646 in 1999, 929 entered service on 16 April 2011, 332 in 2017, and 465 went live on 18 June 2026 as New York’s first area code starting with 4.

How the State System Grew

New York’s numbering grew outward from 212. The original 1947 arrangement gave the whole city one code and upstate regions their own early codes. As the metropolitan area filled its pools, splits created 718 in 1984 and later codes downstate, and the overlay era then added supply without moving borders: 347 in 1999 over the outer boroughs, 646 the same year over Manhattan, 929 in 2011, 332 in 2017, and upstate and Long Island overlays including 680 over 315, 838 over 518, 934 over 631, 624 over 516 and 329 over 845, with 465 completing the current picture in 2026.

For readers of this site, the state list matters mainly as context for 929. A 929 number sits inside the busiest numbering environment in the state, sharing streets with three other codes and bordering 914 to the north and the Long Island codes to the east. That density is why 929 also became a commercial phenomenon, ranked the number 1 most purchased area code in the United States in NumberBarn’s 2025 study. No upstate code carries that kind of national demand, because no other region combines this many people, businesses and new lines in this small a footprint.
