929 Area Code Map: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx & Staten Island

The 929 area code covers New York City’s four outer boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island – plus Marble Hill. As an overlay of 718 and 347, 929 shares the exact same map. Here is everything about where 929 works.

Where Is the 929 Area Code?

The 929 area code is located in New York City, New York, USA. It covers the four outer boroughs: Brooklyn (Kings County), Queens (Queens County), the Bronx (Bronx County) and Staten Island (Richmond County), plus the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.

Here is the key thing most maps get wrong: 929 does not have a map of its own. It is an overlay area code, which means it covers exactly the same territory as area codes 718 and 347. A 929 phone number and a 718 phone number can exist on the same street, in the same building, in Brooklyn. The 929 footprint covers roughly 277 square miles and is home to between 6.5 and 8 million residents, making it one of the densest numbering plan areas in North America.

Quick answer: If you are looking at a map of where 718 works in New York City, you are looking at the 929 map too. Same streets, same neighborhoods, same borders.

Brooklyn: The Largest 929 Territory

Brooklyn is the most populous borough in the 929 footprint and generates the highest demand for new numbers. From the brownstone blocks of Park Slope to the waterfront tech offices of Williamsburg and DUMBO, a 929 number here signals outer-borough New York. Brooklyn alone accounts for roughly a third of all 929 assignments.

Queens: The Diversity Engine

Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world, and 929 serves all of it. With two major airports (JFK and LaGuardia) inside its borders plus dense residential neighborhoods from Astoria to Jamaica, Queens generates enormous demand for new phone numbers, which is exactly why the 929 overlay was needed in the first place.

The Bronx: Home of Hip-Hop and the Yankees

The Bronx, home to Yankee Stadium and the birthplace of hip-hop, has carried 929 numbers since the overlay launched in 2011. The Bronx was added to the 718 area back in 1992, and 929 simply added fresh numbering capacity to the same streets, from Riverdale in the north to Mott Haven in the south.

Staten Island: The Forgotten Borough

Staten Island, connected to Manhattan by the famous free ferry, is fully inside the 929 area, from St. George where the ferry lands to Tottenville at the island’s southern tip. As the least dense borough, it holds a smaller share of 929 numbers but is fully covered.

What 929 Does NOT Cover

This is where many websites get it wrong. Area code 929 does not cover Manhattan proper. Manhattan (New York County south of Marble Hill) uses area codes 212, 646 and 332. If someone tells you a 929 number is a Manhattan number, they are mistaken.

The one exception is Marble Hill: a small Manhattan neighborhood that sits geographically on the Bronx side of the Harlem River. Because of how telephone exchanges were wired decades ago, Marble Hill uses 929, 718 and 347 like the Bronx, not Manhattan’s 212.

Bordering Area Codes

The 929 territory borders several other area codes:

  • North: 914 (Westchester County)
  • East: 516 and 363 (Nassau County, Long Island)
  • West (across the Hudson River): New Jersey codes 201, 551, 973 and 862
  • South: Atlantic Ocean, from the shorelines of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island
Common confusion: Some websites wrongly list Manhattan neighborhoods like SoHo or Tribeca as being “in 929.” They are not. Those neighborhoods use 212, 646 or 332.

Why 929 Shares Its Map: Overlay Explained

Before 1999, each part of New York City had essentially one area code per zone. When cell phones, pagers and fax machines started draining the supply of available numbers, regulators had two choices: split the map (forcing half the city to change their phone numbers) or overlay a new code on top of the old one.

New York chose overlays. That is why 347 was added on top of 718 in 1999, 929 was added on top of both in 2011, and 465 was added in 2026. Nobody had to change their number when any of these arrived. New phone lines simply started receiving the newest code once the older ones ran low on available numbers.

This is also why 10-digit dialing is mandatory throughout the 929 area. With four codes (718, 347, 929, 465) sharing the same streets, the phone system needs all 10 digits to know which specific number you mean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 929 area code map look like?

The 929 map is identical to the 718 and 347 maps: it covers Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island in New York City, plus Marble Hill. Because 929 is an overlay, it has no separate geographic boundary of its own.

Is 929 in Manhattan?

No. 929 does not cover Manhattan proper, which uses area codes 212, 646 and 332. The only exception is Marble Hill, a Manhattan neighborhood geographically attached to the Bronx that uses 929, 718 and 347.

What cities are in the 929 area code?

There is no single 929 city. 929 covers neighborhoods across New York City’s four outer boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

Does 929 cover Long Island?

No. Long Island’s Nassau County uses 516 and 363, while Suffolk County uses 631 and 934. The 929 area stops at the Queens-Nassau County border.

What area codes border 929?

929 borders 914 to the north (Westchester County), 516 and 363 to the east (Nassau County, Long Island), and New Jersey area codes 201, 551, 973 and 862 across the Hudson River to the west.

Why do 929, 718 and 347 cover the same area?

They are overlay codes. Instead of splitting the map when phone numbers ran out, regulators added new codes on top of the existing territory: 347 in 1999, 929 in 2011, and 465 in 2026.

How big is the 929 area?

The 929 footprint covers roughly 277 square miles and is home to between 6.5 and 8 million residents, making it one of the densest numbering plan areas in North America.
